Trace here -- Astronomically speaking, the moon s phases FLY by -- pun intended, and every new moon we get a phenomenon is known as The Old Moon in the New Moon s Arms, or Earthshine!
To see it: Head out and look West and at the rising, waxing crescent moon.
As the week progresses, the crescent will broaden, but the darker side of the moon should be illuminated too giving the impression of a globe hanging in the sky.
This is Earthshine and it s one of my favorites.
It happens because of Earth s ALBEDO, the light that reflects off the planet back into space and some falls on the darker side of the moon!
The new moon happens early in the week, so we should get some Earthshine, but even if you miss it -- a robot is landing on Mars on the 18th, coincidentally coinciding with a Moon-Mars conjunction.
So get out there and keep lookin up!
