In many places it means you can get your driver's license and work more significant hours at a job, meaning you can also start paying income taxes.
If that's the case, why can't you vote at 16?
The 26th Amendment to the Constitution sets the voting age to 18.
This amendment was passed during the height of the Vietnam War when 18 year olds were being drafted to the war effort.
Before this amendment, states set their own minimum voting ages typically to 21.
The common phrase for young people in favor of the 26 was old enough to die, old enough to vote.
Now, 16 year olds are not being drafted into the military and we do have to set the minimum age somewhere.
But those 16 year olds today who work and pay taxes might bring up another famous saying in America, no taxation without representation.
If the United States can tax the citizens, should they be allowed a say in who gets to make decisions with that tax money?
How does the rest of the world handle this question?
The list may be relatively small, but there are countries that allow 16 year olds to vote.
While most of the world says the aged 18, some countries go as high as 25.
In the U.S., bills have been submitted in both the House of Representatives and the Senate in recent years to set the voting age to 16.
But these have not been signed into law.
Some individual states allow 17 year olds to vote in state elections and sometimes even presidential primaries on the condition that they will be 18 by the time of the general election in November.
Additionally, some towns and cities across the country have begun allowing 16 year olds to vote in municipal elections.
But things like mayor, town council and school board.
Still, we may be far away from the voting age being lowered for all elections across the country.
So what do you think?
Do the voting age be lowered nationally to 16?
Or is it good right where it is?
